Arthur has £150,000 in one bank's savings account (no temporary high balance applies). From 1 December 2025, how much is protected by the FSCS if the bank fails, and what is a simple way to protect the rest?
From 1 December 2025 the FSCS protects deposits up to £120,000 per eligible person per authorised institution (COMP 10.2; fscs.org.uk). Arthur has £30,000 above that, which he can protect by moving it to a different authorised institution. Brands sharing one banking licence count as one institution, and another account at the same bank is still covered only once. £85,000 was the limit before 1 December 2025.
Using the old £85,000 limit or forgetting that brands can share a licence.
