CeMAP Pass Mark: 70% in Every Unit
4 min read · facts checked 11 Oct 2026
Every CeMAP unit has the same pass mark: 70%. What changes is the number of marks, because the units have different numbers of questions.
| Unit | Questions | Pass (70%) | Merit (80%) | Distinction (90%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FRE1 | 40 | 28 | 32 | 36 |
| FRE2 | 40 | 28 | 32 | 36 |
| MRT1 | 50 | 35 | 40 | 45 |
| MRT2 | 40 | 28 | 32 | 36 |
| ASEW/ASSC | 60 | 42 | 48 | 54 |
What a 70% pass mark means in practice
On a 40-question paper you can drop 12 marks. On the synoptic paper you can drop 18. One weak case study (5 or 10 linked questions) can use up most of that margin, so do not leave a whole topic unrevised.
If you fail a unit
